Note and Practice
- We use the words ຂໍເວົ້າກັບ…ແດ່ (ຈັກໜ້ອຍໄດ້ບໍ)? to ask to speak to someone on the phone.
ຂໍເວົ້າກັບ ນາງ ແມ່ລີ ແດ່ຈັກໜ້ອຍ ໄດ້ບໍ?
May I speak with Ms. Mary for a moment?
ຂໍລົມກັບ ທ່ານ ພີເຕີ້ ແດ່ຈັກໜ້ອຍ ໄດ້ບໍ?
May I talk to Mr. Peter for a moment?
ຂໍລົມກັບ ທ້າວ ວິໄລ ແດ່?

Below are the ways to answer the questions above:
ກໍາລັງເວົ້າ : I’m Speaking.
ລາວບໍ່ຢູ່ : He / She is not here.
ຖ້າບຶດນຶ່ງ : Wait a moment.
ໂທມາມື້ອື່ນໄດ້ບໍ? : Can you call again tomorrow?
ລາວບໍ່ຢູ່ ໂທມາຕອນບ່າຍໄດ້ບໍ?: She is not here. Can you call again in the afternoon?
- We use the words (ຂໍ) ສັ່ງຄວາມໄວ້ໄດ້ບໍ / (ຂໍ) ຝາກຄວາມໄວ້ໄດ້ບໍ? to ask if you could leave a message.
Can I leave a message?
ຂ້ອຍ ຂໍ ສັ່ງຄວາມໄວ້ ໃຫ້ ທ້າວບຸນ ໄດ້ບໍ?
Can I please leave a message for Mr. Bun?
- We use the words ກຳລັງ + verb ... ຢູ່ to indicate action which is taking place.
The children are watching TV.
ຊ່ວຍບອກລາວວ່າ ຂ້ອຍ ກຳລັງ ຖ້າ ຢູ່ ແດ່
Please tell her I'm waiting.
